Do I need a visa (eTA) to visit Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Kenya no longer issues traditional visas on arrival. Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), Kenya's e-visa, approved before they fly. Citizens of East African Community countries are exempt.

Apply at least 2 weeks before travel. Approval usually takes a few working days.
Have ready: a passport valid for 6+ months with a blank page, a passport photo, your flight details and your accommodation details (we send these with your booking confirmation).
Every traveller needs their own eTA, children included.
From 6 October 2026, the application also asks for the mandatory visitor health insurance (see the next question).

Yes. From 6 October 2026, visitors to Kenya need health insurance, and it must be bought through the government's own portal. It costs US$44 per person and is arranged alongside your eTA.

Your checklist: three steps

Apply for your eTA well before you fly, at etakenya.go.ke.
Buy the insurance during the application, or beforehand at insurance.ecitizen.go.ke. The two portals recognise each other. Budget US$44 for each traveller, children included.
Keep your proof. No policy document is issued, so save your reference number and a screenshot of the "Valid" status, and carry a copy of your eTA.

Still being clarified

The rule came in at short notice and some details are still changing.

Already hold an eTA? Travellers with eTAs issued before the change have so far been reported entering Kenya without trouble, but official guidance is still to come. We strongly recommend buying the cover through the official portal before you fly.

Already have travel insurance? The portal doesn't currently accept insurance bought elsewhere. Keep your own policy anyway: the government cover is a minimum and doesn't replace full travel insurance.
